“The Ego is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.”
– Deepak Chopra
This morning, I was speaking with a very good friend of mine about the ego. She was telling me about a situation she was going through with a friend of hers; How it appeared that he was more concerned with being correct, than he was about relinquishing any power to her. So, as the conversation went on, she seemed to believe that this behavior is more prevalent in men than it is in women. I disagreed. I believe that men and women are, both, capable of displaying an enormous ego.
If as Deepak Chopra states “The Ego…lives in fear.” then what fear are you living with? Are you afraid that someone will think less of you? Are you afraid that people will see through you, to your 10-year-old self, who is really afraid of things that go bump in the night? What is it that drives you to the point where you’re not content with just being that great individual you were created in life to be? Whose APPROVAL are you seeking?
Initially, I associated the ego with pride, but I couldn’t be farther from the truth. As I began to break down pride and the ego, I realized that pride is happy just being…however, the ego, needs to boast, it needs to shine brighter showing its superiority.
